The Spirit and New Birth

Are you following the law or walking in the spirit?

Pastor Ayo Adebisi shared the relation between the Spirit and New Birth using the word from John 3:5-8. A new life with Christ is a life that is not bound by the law but guided by the spirit. The story of Nicodemus explains this perfectly.

Nicodemus was a Pharisee, a teacher of the law and a man who had spent his entire life studying God. He was respected by his students because of his profound knowledge of God. But a Man came to his city, preached about this same God, and had him questioning his aged knowledge and stance concerning his teachings. Out of curiosity and wonder, he went to meet this Man he knew was sent from God and asked him a pondering question: “How can a man be born again?”

This question might seem silly for a man of his status. But we cannot get wisdom unless we ask from the One who owns it.

Religion gives you rules to follow and laws to memorise. But Christ came to give us a new life characterized by freedom from the law, and an embodiment of the Spirit that moves like the wind. Since we have died with Christ and entered into a New Life, we are no longer bound by the law but we are born anew by water and the Spirit. This means our new life is not bound by how many Bible verses we know, or how often we go to church, but by our belief and surrender to the Holy Spirit who leads us right.

Nicodemus got to a point in his life where he began to question if he was walking with the Spirit or practicing the law (religion). In our walk with God, we will come to crossroads when we don’t know the part to follow and no laws guide it. The answer lies with the Spirit. All we have to do is ask Jesus the questions that seem too hard, too silly, or too embarrassing, and we will be guided accordingly.

Don’t be too scared to ask God all your questions.

There was a time I was heading back home from work, and it was raining heavily. The road to my house gets extremely bad whenever it rains, so there were no vehicles. I was already wet, so I contemplated whether to wait under a shed or keep walking. My mind told me to just keep walking; after all, I wouldn’t get a tricycle to take me home, and I didn’t fancy commuting on bikes in the rain.

As I kept walking, a car from behind honked at me and told me to hop in. I did. In it was a man, his wife and their baby. As I got in, I immediately texted my sister about my situation.
We got talking, and then they said they wanted to check their site first, but they will bring me back to my house. I was sceptical, but I told them I was fine with that. I just prayed they were not kidnappers. We kept going, and at some point, we got to a place surrounded by bush. I got scared. My phone was low. I didn’t have a network. It was raining. If I wanted to run, where would I run to?

“Of course, a site is always in the middle of nowhere. What were you thinking getting into this car?” I kept asking myself this as they drove deeper into the bush.

Eventually, we got to their site. They spent about 20 minutes there while I waited in their car. They apologised for taking so long, and then we headed back to the road that led to my house.

My body was shaking, but I still kept calm because they were having conversations with me. I exchanged numbers with the woman at some point.

Anyway, they dropped me off at my house. Even insisted on entering my compound, and they left. As I got into my apartment, I asked my sister if she had seen the car that brought me in. She said no. Then I tried calling the number to thank them, but it wasn’t going through. To this day, I can’t reach them.

Sometimes I still wonder if that was real. I wonder if God just brought those people to save me from trekking in the rain, and they do not actually exist.
